Questions Guys Should Never Ask Girls

Turning that magical age of 18 is truly a milestone in life... You receive more responsibility. You start to be considered an adult. You start working, start college, maybe go on a mission, start taking dating seriously... And you start to go to a delightful little thing called a Young Single Adult Ward.

Now, in my five years of being a Young Single Adult, I've seen and heard some pretty crazy things. You eventually get used to the eccentric in a YSA ward. But, after last night's FHE activity, I'm going to put my foot down about some socially unacceptable questions. There are just some things boys should never say to girls. This post is to help bring to light some questions boys should not ask girls at FHE activities or church functions. (Or at any social event for that matter).

After texting 15 close girl friends I've compiled a list of the most common and embarrassing questions a boy can ask a girl. So boys, please take these ignominious questions to heart. It will save you from looking like an idiot and save us girls some heartache.

1. So, how much do you weigh? (Variations of this question: Are you pregnant? Are you wearing THAT?)

A significant amount of the woman population, in all shapes and sizes, deals with or has had some insecurities with her body. We would appreciated it if you wouldn't draw negative attention towards our personal appearance. Just don't ask these questions. Ever.

2. You look sick, are you sick? (Variation of this question: You look tired, are you tired?)

Let me tell you my experience with this question: Usually on Sundays (I've had 9:00am church for three consecutive years) I wake up at 8:40, roll out of bed wearing my glasses and hair in a ponytail, throw on a dress, throw on some makeup and run to church hoping I'm going to make it on time for the Sacrament. One Sunday I actually woke up early to shower and get ready for church. I'm feeling pretty good because my hair is done, I smell nice, my makeup isn't all smudgy, and I actually feel awake for church. After Sacrament meeting, this guy approached me and asked, "Oh, Alexis...Are you sick? You look really sick... How are you feeling?" ...Yeah, lets just say that I don't put too much time into my church appearance now.

3. Do you need us to call another girl to come play _______ with us? (Insert sport here)

I actually had this question submitted several times, in different variations, from my sporty/athletic girl friends who've played sports at a high school and collegiate level. I've never had this questioned asked to me personally (I'm definitely not sporty) but I can see why this would be frustrating. If a girl is somewhat decent at a sport, give her a chance!

4. Are you on your period? (Variation: Are you pms-ing?)

Yes, I have witnessed this question at a church function. It was super awkward. This question actually makes me squirly in general because I'm not an open person about personal stuff. Just because a girl is sad or grumpy doesn't mean they are "hormonal." They're probably just stressed out. For example, girls can get kind of emotional when they're dealing with: family stress/friend drama/church calling/feeling the spirit/full time job/full time school/full time boyfriend/dating drama/car problems- all at the same time.
Here's a little reproductive/math lesson for you boys: The average menstrual cycle is 28 days (4 weeks) with an actual period only being 7 days (1 week). So, you have a 25% chance of being right that a girl is on her period. Not good chances boys.

So, there it is. Please don't ask us those questions. On a brighter note, the boys that I know and interact with (and that actually read this blog) on a regular basis are wonderful. I love you guys so much. So... here's a list of the amazing things that I, and the 15 girls I texted, love about you!

- I love it when you tell me I'm beautiful.
- I love it when you give me any specific complement about my appearance or personality.
- I love it when you tell people you are proud to be dating me.
- I love it when you share a compliment that someone else told you about me.
- I love it when you show appreciation for things I do for you.
- I love it when you can kill spiders and bugs for me.
- I love that you are always so warm.
- I love it when you offer me your coat when I'm freezing.
- I love it when you are sincere and honest with me.
- I love it when you'd rather hang out with me than do anything else.

Thanks for reading!
